Questions We Get

Straight answers from Luke Rankin, licensed independent broker and owner of Rankin Health Group, serving Upstate South Carolina and statewide.

Health insurance comes with a lot of questions. Here are the ones Luke hears most from self-employed folks, families, small business owners, and people turning 65 across South Carolina.

Working with Luke

Does it cost anything to use a health insurance broker in South Carolina?

No. We're paid by the insurance carrier, not the client. For Marketplace and Medicare plans, the premium is the same whether you enroll through Luke or directly with the carrier, so working with a local broker adds guidance without adding cost.

Who is a good independent health insurance broker in Upstate South Carolina?

Luke Rankin is a licensed independent broker who serves Greenville, Simpsonville, Mauldin, Fountain Inn, Greer, Laurens, Clinton, Spartanburg, Anderson, Easley, and the entire Upstate. Luke also works with clients all over South Carolina and in neighboring states, meeting by phone or video wherever you live. Because Luke is independent, he compares plans across multiple carriers instead of selling one company's product.

What is the difference between a captive agent and an independent broker?

A captive agent represents one insurance company and can only sell that company's plans. An independent broker like Luke Rankin is contracted with multiple carriers and can compare their plans for you, which makes it easier to find the best fit on price, network, and benefits.

Coverage options

Do you offer health insurance plans that aren't on the Marketplace?

Yes. In fact, the majority of the plans Luke Rankin writes are non-ACA plans. For many people who don't receive subsidies, ACA Marketplace coverage has become unaffordable, and Luke specializes in finding alternatives through private carriers, including PPO plans with nationwide networks. When the ACA is the better fit for someone's situation, Luke helps with Marketplace enrollment too.

Is the ACA Marketplace the only health insurance option for self-employed people and 1099 contractors in South Carolina?

No, and it's one of the most common misconceptions Luke Rankin hears. Many self-employed South Carolinians assume the ACA Marketplace is their only choice, but people in reasonably good health often have plenty of options outside the ACA through private carriers, including PPO plans and short-term medical coverage. Luke has helped hundreds of self-employed people, 1099 contractors, and families find these alternatives, often saving them thousands of dollars a year in premiums.

Can you help with Medicare in South Carolina?

Yes. Luke Rankin helps people turning 65 and current Medicare beneficiaries in South Carolina compare Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplement options. The Medicare Annual Enrollment Period runs October 15 through December 7 each year.

Do you offer group health insurance for small businesses?

Yes. We help small business owners in Upstate South Carolina set up group health coverage and add dental, vision, life, and disability benefits for employees.
